Where to invest the time and what to not waste time with. He was no joke, his shop had everything, no guesswork. Flowbench, he made his own, he also had different kinds of dynamometers. Go find his book Tuning secrets by Smoky Yunick and give it a good read. I worked for a bike shop where the owner built and raced bikes, and he followed that book and built many winning bikes over the years. While other shops were wasting time with the perfect valve seat angle, or piston, fit, he knew what really worked, delivered power and reliability. Just about after every one of these cars found their deaths due to politics that were more than meet's the eye at the time, each racing league of their kind became lame. Rather than finding smart ways to protect drivers, they simply focused on finding innovation to punish TRUE innovation. Everything became so routine and lacking in any allowed progression of each sport that everyone rather go watch the illegal circuits and effectively killed the credibility of nearly each and every one of these leagues, two of the most shameful of them all being NASCAR and the leading hosts of F1 racers. Most of these bans were actually less about safety or 'incurring costs by teams' which is a bunch of bologna in a world where the costs continue to skyrocket regardless, and don't get me started on how much tax payer money goes into bullshit politics the average citizen would blatantly vote against, than they were back door polatics of threats by companies participation and other kept silent fiascos regarding pay offs into accounts that are still not openly talked about to this day. People who take on these racing jobs understand what the risks are, they're not lied too un like the NFL injuries or the Major League baseball farm teams that camp their claimed chance major league players to be to sleep in roach motels as they travel about with barely reasonable pay. Instead they're insulted with the lies that these things are built purely for their safety and benefit when really it's particular companies like FORD, and Porche to name a couple making threats behind the scenes when not paying off a few groups of people in these leagues. Porche won a particular series by whining that because BMW didn't have enough street sold versions on the road that it wasn't in the 'spirit' of the competition in question. They were asked to then sell massive amounts to be considered and with the impossible demand forced to drop out, leaving porche an easy win. Those in the know of what Porche did, including the very defective designs in comparison to the cost they ask for their units, like excessive body role, has some pros calling them the Ricer of exotics. A shameful tittle indeed, but perhaps a little more earned than many will ever realize who haven't looked deep enough into these unfortunate highway robbery exotics not giving the boost for their buck, Nor the actual proclaimed thought of safety.

R32 GT-R Calsonic. My favourite, it was legit to seal the plenum at the base of the screen, connect it to the bell housing to cool the clutch. It was also legal to connect the the carb to the sealed plenum to get cool air to the carb. Smokey made up a clutch cover with large blades to make a fan. His quote, which I have seen on film was, Let me tell you, 5 psi of boost at the carburettor mouth is a very useful thing in a normally aspirated racing formula. The first one was not rule bending that was cheating because there's clearly a specification on how much fuel you can carry but they make the tank bigger and just try to hide it just like what penske did with the Camaro in 1968 when they dip the car in acid and replaced the number of the car with the second car so it can pass scrutineering. All part of racing. happens with all types of motorsport. Even today in f1 and rally. Cant remember what team it was but they ran a turbocharger that had to have a inlet restrictor a certain size will say 30mm for example and the r,n,d got the task to bend the rules to get round this. So the came up with a inlet restricter that when cold would be 30mm and when hot would open up by 5mm to get more air in the compressor just giving the edge they needed. The rules said the inlet had to be 30mm but didn't say anything about expansions due to heat. It's ingenious if you ask me. If you aint winning, you aint cheating. Hook me. I need help. The 7/8th Chevelle was one of the fastest cars during practice. It never ran in the race. When they were inspecting it before qualifying Smokey got so upset with all of the changes that they wanted corrected that while the car was being inspected, Smokey climbed into the car and drove it across town to Smokey Yunick's BEST DAMN GARAGE IN TOWN... The 1970 Monte Carlo with the large fuel line was not caught before the race. It won the Daytona 500 by a handy margin, because it did not have to stop for gas as often. When they inspected the car after the race and saw the huge fuel line underneath the car, they immediately changed the rule before the next race. The win was not taken away because it was not illegal at the time of the race.
You forgot the 427 Cammer that was banned by NASCAR, because it was wayy too powerful. Weight requirements aren't made to be bent. It's a rule. If you can't follow it, you're not competing. DQ.
